The Russian Energy Week – an international platform for discussing the main challenges faced by the energy sector of the economy and topical issues of the development of the fuel and energy sector, was held in Moscow from October 13 to 15, 2021. The Forum was organized by the Roscongress Foundation, the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation and the Government of Moscow. The Forum brought together 2,500 participants from more than 80 countries. As part of the business program, 32 events were held with the participation of 204 speakers.
Within the framework of the event, a panel session "Growing renewable energy markets: is there a potential for energy exports from Russia to Europe" was held.
Panel discussion concept:
Today, the world is entering an era of energy transition, in the development of which more and more countries declare goals to achieve carbon neutrality. Thus, the European Union plans to become carbon-neutral by 2050. Germany is pursuing an even more ambitious goal, wanting to move to zero-CO2 development by 2045. Following these goals, both Europe and Germany will soon become dependent on imports related to renewable energy sources.
While political discussions are focused on hydrogen in its various manifestations, there are additional ways of energy exports from Russia to Europe: in particular, the Kola Peninsula and a number of other Russian territories have great prospects for generating electricity based on wind energy. The geographical proximity to the Scandinavian energy market with its extensive potential of pumped storage stations, as well as the possibility of laying submarine cables to Germany through the Baltic Sea, represent a business case that deserves further study. What are the forecasts for the development of decarbonization in Europe? Are there any opportunities for Russian-German cooperation in this area? Electricity from Russia to Germany: is the energy bridge project feasible?
